Podcast 34: Thomas Huber – Finding Freedom & Motivation in the Impossible

Thomas Huber

In this episode, Kevin Roet sits down with Thomas Huber for a thoughtful and inspiring conversation about motivation, curiosity, and a lifelong passion for climbing. Known as one half of the legendary Huber brothers. Thomas reflects on the journey that led him to become a professional climber and why.  After decades in the mountains, he still feels genuinely excited every time he ties into a rope. At the heart of the conversation is Thomas’s belief that climbing is far more than performance or achievement. It is a way of exploring both the world and himself.

Thomas speaks passionately about his deep connection to Yosemite Valley.  Describing the valley as a place that shaped him both as a climber and as a person. He recalls the energy and creativity of the Stone Monkeys era and what it meant to be part of such an influential chapter in climbing history. For Thomas, Yosemite represented freedom, imagination, and a classroom for life.

A major theme throughout the episode is Thomas’s relationship with the impossible. He explains how being confronted by something seemingly unattainable is exactly what motivates him to try harder, think differently, and ultimately learn more about who he is. Rather than fearing failure, he embraces uncertainty as an essential part of growth.

The conversation also turns to the Eiger project and the emotional significance it holds for him. Thomas shares how the project became a way to honour and commemorate close friends he has lost throughout his climbing career, giving a deeper meaning to the challenge itself.

Above all, Thomas speaks about maintaining the curiosity of the small boy still inside him—a sense of wonder and excitement that continues to drive him to climb at a world-class level today.
