Podcast 26: Richard Jensen – Aid Climbing, Isolation & Fear

Richard Jensen

In this episode, Kevin Roet interviews Richard Jensen—a respected voice in the aid climbing world.  Richard offers a rare and deeply personal look into the life of a climber who consistently pushed limits most never dare approach.

Richard Jensen spoke vividly about his earliest motivations for climbing.  Reflecting on a childhood moment of clarity in which he realised he never wanted fear to dictate the direction of his life. Driven by curiosity, exposure to adventure, and an unshakable desire for self-mastery.  He made the decision early to take up climbing specifically to confront fear—not outrun it. He explained that aid climbing, demanded patience, vulnerability, precision, and emotional resilience.  Forcing him to meet life’s challenges deliberately and head-on. The mental demands of navigating blank stone sections on tiny gear placements became, for Richard, both a metaphor and a training ground for facing life outside the wall.

One of the interview’s most compelling moments came when Richard Jensen revisited the dark and tumultuous events surrounding a first-ascent in Yosemite. Though he avoided sensational retelling, he acknowledged the painful “antics” that unfolded.  Territorial tensions, and human conflict that soured what should have been a pure pursuit of adventure. Richard admitted that the emotional weight of those experiences lingered for years, shaping his understanding of climbing culture.

Later, Richard Jensen expressed candid disappointment with the only two so-called A6 routes he had climbed. While grateful for survival and lessons learned.  He revealed that the label had created expectations the climbs themselves failed to deliver, leaving him disillusioned.

Most poignant of all was his recollection of the final climb that ultimately led him to walk away from aid climbing entirely. Where a lifelong question finally found its answer. Walking away was not defeat, but arrival: the moment he had been preparing for since childhood, when he first vowed to meet fear on his own terms.

Richard’s story, delivered with honesty and humility.  Tune in to hear Richard’s journey.
