Episode 07: How to Try Hard in Climbing
Author – Kevin Roet
That is a very good question. In this article we will explain how to try hard in climbing?
Some of us find it easier to tap into that try hard mode. But, is trying hard a skill we are born with? Or is this something we can learn over time?
The beginning
It all started when I was climbing with a good friend Danny in Kalymnos. A super strong finessed climber, but always climbed within his comfort zone, and rarely redlined. And there is me, slightly rough around the edges regarding technique, but always (well, mostly) gave it everything no matter what I climbed. He saw something in me, which at the time I was not aware of. Before I left to go home, he mentioned he would like to know how to get into that same mindset. A seed was sown, and when I got back to the UK, I started soul searching (within myself) and researching about what it is that makes people try hard in the moment.
Is it in my personality? Was I born with this trait?
As a kid I was always scared of things, I was very shy and insecure in myself. Not the best mixture of personality traits to give it my all. As I got older, I would learn to push my comfort zone, a little at a time. Mostly, very little at a time.
So, I’m not naturally gifted then!
Observations
When I coach or watch other climbers in the moment, very few climbers give it their all in the moment. When on the sharp end, most people let go just before they redline, or either shout take, sit on the rope, downclimb or just hang on for dear life till they run out of energy.
So, why don’t people take it to the limit more often?
Now that is a complicated question, yet a very simple answer. There are so many reasons, simply put, it usually is because a distracting thought, an element of fear/anxiety, some form of self-belief or how one sees oneself.
What can we do?
Here at Climb in Flow we have developed a workshop that will teach you how to try hard in climbing, and access “beast” mode. This workshop is for anyone that climbs, roped climbing or bouldering. Whether you climb 6a or 8a, learn to tap into going all out.
It is not a mystical trait only a few are born with, you can train yourself to try hard and learn to enjoy it over time.
We will help you understand yourself better, and how you can plan to get into beast mode more often. So, you feel more comfortable to try your projects, and find yourself reaching new heights in your climbing.
Most people will focus on getting stronger, but the mind is usually forgotten. Without training physically, we can get you climbing higher grades. And learn to enjoy it, instead of avoiding it. It is not a magic potion.
Through self-awareness, practice and learning about what makes you tick, we can help you develop the skills to try harder more often.
No-one else in the world is running a workshop like this. Wouldn’t it be amazing that when you go climbing you could give it 100%. Let us help you get there.
